ZANE GREY - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 02/17 - HFSID 272573. ZANE GREY Legendary author of Western adventures feels helpless and homesick after losing his luggage in Mexico. Autograph Letter signed: "Pearl" His birth name was Pearl Zane Grey. San Luis Potosi, February 17, n.
To "Dolly" [his wife, Lina], in full: Well, it's finally happened. I woke up this morning on the train feeling that some mistake might have been made yesterday in checking my baggage, and I got off here to see. The measly little trunk that held a duplicate check to mine told the story. My trunk has been sent off with some one else. Yesterday I trusted to the Palace Hotel porter to check my baggage, and this is the result. No one speaks English here; I can't make myself understood, and I can't go on without my trunk. I have telegraphed, but feel hopeless on any result. This is the one instance when I relaxed my usual vigilance, and I certainly got it good.
I have only one chance, and that is that the other man is honest. But it's a forlorn hope, from the size and looks of his baggage. What a miserable farce this whole truth has been.
I wish I were home. I'll let you know what happens later. Slight paper separation at some mailing folds. Accompanied by autograph envelope (unsigned, 5½x4¼) addressed to Mrs. Zane Grey, New York, N.With printed address of a hotel in San Luis Potosi. Upper right portion of envelope, including stamp, postmark and name of the hotel, torn off. Handwritten portion of envelope is in fine condition. Grey, who was known as "The Father of the Western Novel", published at least one Western novel a year, many of which were made into feature films.
His wrote other fiction as well, including baseball stories. He wrote numerous articles and books on fishing.Zane Grey married Lina Roth, whom he called Dolly, in 1905. He used his travels to develop ideas for his books, but he doesn't sound much like one of his Western heroes in this plaintive letter from Mexico. See more material from these signers.
