Black ink notations at bottom edge in unknown hand. 1 page, 5x7¾, 1 sheet folded. In full: My dear sir - I received Dymond's books without any account - I send you nine sovereigns out of which I will thank you to pay yourself.
I fear that you have incurred other expenses on my account - If so, this sum may meet them - & should any thing remain, I. According to the notations at the bottom, this letter was sent to Thomas Thornby, Esq.
One of the foremost Unitarian theologians of his time, Channing was also one of the most important Unitarian preachers of the early nineteenth century and known for his articulate and passionate sermons and speeches. He tended to avoid esoteric points of doctrine in favor of preaching morality, charity and Christian responsibility so, not surprisingly, he also became a leading figure in American movements to end slavery and poverty and promote temperance and peace. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Adhesive residue in corners and at right and bottom edges, which touch handwriting and signature. Light tear at right edge. Folded twice horizontally and vertically. See more material from these signers. See more listings in our RELIGION & HUMANITARIANS (543). Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
