I wish him to know Moore.... Under the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon, Washington Irving wrote essays, including Rip Van Winkle and Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which appeared in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Irving's stories were highly influenced by German folktales. After moving to Europe, Irving wrote A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus , which was published in January 1828 and was also the first project of Irving's to be published with his own name. He was regularly approached by aspiring young authors for advice or endorsement, including Edgar Allan Poe, who sought Irving's comments on "William Wilson" and "The Fall of the House of Usher". In 1842, after an endorsement from Secretary of State Daniel Webster, President John Tyler appointed Irving as Minister to Spain. He served in that capacity until 1846. There are multiple memorials to Irving and he is credited with being an influential part of American literature. Mounting remnants on verso, light show through at blank corner.
