Brevetted in the Mexican War for gallantry, Peninsula Campaign, successfully defended Suffolk against Longstreet (Hood's and Pickett's divisions) where he was wounded in action. Later in the war, he directed the District of NC and Department of the East, where he regulated affairs with the British provinces of the Canadian frontier.
