STEPHEN HIGGINSON - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 06/29/1791 - HFSID 295406. To Le Roy Bayard, New York, in full: Enclosed you have Invoice & Bill of Lading for the fish & mackerel that you ordered, the amount of which is to your Debit. Some of the items are of smaller size to help the Storage, or the Schooner could not have taken the whole. It is an advantage often in the sale to have different sizes, & with that view we often have them so packed.

They are not marked or numbered, the weights only are marked on the heads with chalk, as you gave no marking for them. Each article is very good & bought at the lowest rate. I mention this for your government, & lest it might miss your attention, being not a common article with you, & remain Sir your very humble servant. Pencil notation (unknown hand) in lower left corner. Commissioned as a privateer during the American Revolution, he represented Massachusetts in the Continental Congress in 1783.

He aided in suppression of Shay's rebellion (1786), and became an inspector for the port of Boston. He wasthe author of the "Laco letters, " vituperative attacks on the character of John Hancock, written to newspapers under this pseudonym. Politically, Higginson was an extreme Federalist and a member of the Essex Junto, so antagonistic to the Jeffersonian Republicans that he advocated secession of the New England states from federal Union.
