ALS: "Schuyler Colfax" as Congressman, 1p, 7¾x9¾. (House of Representatives), Washington, 1856 July 8. In full: I will keep a sharp look out on the matter you suggest; & go for Binding with great pleasure. Wendell says it will make 800 pages he thinks; & my idea was that Pub Docs of that size were required by law to be bound.

I can only promise one man's influence in the matter, but it is yours freely. " On July 7, 1856, the day before he wrote this letter, Congressman Colfax voted for a resolution that provided for each House member who had not already received them, editions of books "of a public character which had been furnished to the previous Congress.

This letter may be referring to these books. He was prominently mentioned as a presidential candidate in 1872, especially by leaders in the liberal Republican movement. Although he refused to join them, it was enough to make administration men oppose his renomination for the vice presidency and he was defeated at the Republican convention. Two ink stains in blank areas, chipped at right edge.
