" On July 7, 1856, the day before he wrote this letter, Congressman Colfax voted for a resolution that provided for each House member who had not already received them, editions of books "of a public character which had been furnished to the previous Congress.This letter may be referring to these books. He was prominently mentioned as a presidential candidate in 1872, especially by leaders in the liberal Republican movement. Although he refused to join them, it was enough to make administration men oppose his renomination for the vice presidency and he was defeated at the Republican convention.
