SAMUEL NELSON Shortly after the accidental death of his grandson, the Associate Justice writes of the tragic event and the subsequent outpouring of support.

Nelson as Associate Justice, 4p, 5x7¾, front and verso. In full: I reached home at the hour expected having arrived at Albany at 11 o'clock P. The day I left you. The funeral was the next morning at 10 o'clock A. Nelson was drowned in the lake about 1:00 P.

All the town were very kind. Every person that had a boat immediately went to the spot and with grappling irons commenced dragging - There were in the end some 30 boats in a line locked close together, and were in operation from between 4 & 5 P. Till 1: o'clock in the morning when he was lift up by a strong fish hook attached to the grappling rope having hooked his pants. It has been a great consolation to all of us that the body was found, and recovered, also without a bruise or scratch. He looked as I saw him so natural that he seemed simply to be asleep.

He was in a sail boat with two boys, a little older than he was (he was 10 instead of 7) and was knocked into the water by the sudden shifting of the boom by a gust of wind. He was there without the knowledge of his parents, but had gone into it with the usual [illegible] of a boy. There was no one in the boat able to save him, and he was some 2 miles up the lake, and far from the shore. I cannot express to you sufficient acknowledgement for the kindness & sensibility shown me by yourself and Mr. S at the commemoration of this sad event: and, in facilitating my journey home.

I appreciate also, deeply, the sympathy from friends who were with us. The Doctor & Kate are utterly broken down in this moment, tho' Kate has met this affliction with the greater firmness. The Bishop was in the neighborhood on his circuit, and I wrote them a most affectionate letter - and, singular, he had just received a telegram from St. Paul, where a son & daughter had gone for health, that his son was dead, by the recurrance (sic) of a sudden hemorage (sic) - My best regards for Mr S and believe me Your obt Servt.
