CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN) Signed 4½x7 autograph letter from a London hotel, writing that he hopes to lecture in Britain if other & more necessary business shall permit. Langham Hotel, /Portland Place, London.

W, no year, October 18. In full: I think it will be 2 or 3 weeks before I shall really know whether I can lecture in Great Britain or not. I certainly shall lecture about 8 or 10 times in this country if other & more necessary business shall permit.

From the University of California Press review of Volume 5 of Mark Twain's Letters prepared by the Mark Twain Project at the University of California, Berkeley. After beginning work on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , he [Clemens] set it aside to collaborate, almost as a lark, on a novel with Charles Dudley Warner.

The novel was hardly completed before Clemens set sail again for England, his second of three trips there during this two-year period, with his wife, child, nursemaid, and private secretary. On his first trip, in 1872, he had been amazed to find himself hailed everywhere as a literary lion. During his second trip, in 1873, his fame and popularity continued to grow. As his letters document in unmatched detail, he engaged in a dizzying round of sightseeing, speech-making, and socializing with literary and political lights, capping his visit with a triumphant London lecture debut. London literary critic, the Reverend H.

Haweis, wrote about one of Clemens' lectures : Twain suddenly made his bow, and went off. I looked at my watch. I was never more taken aback. I had been sitting there exactly an hour and twenty minutes. It seemed ten minutes, at the outside.

If you have ever tried to address a public meeting, you will know what this means. It means that Mark Twain is a consummate public speaker.
