During his days in Hollywood, Ronald Reagan made friends with Phil Regan, a former New York City police officer with a fine tenor voice who found a niche in Warner Bros. Films as the Singing Cop. In 1966 Regan, a staunch Democrat, headed Democrats for Reagan during the future President's first campaign for Governor of California. The two remained friends, even after Regan was implicated in a bribery scandal and served two years in prison in the mid-1970s.
As President, Reagan received some genealogical research from the Irish government and discovered that he and Phil Regan shared a common ancestor.
