TANEY - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED CIRCA 1802 - HFSID 154803. TANEY Very rare letter signed by detailing a 23-pound suit from around 1802, three years after he passed the par and long before he became Attorney General and Chief Justice of the United States. Attorney General in 1831 and then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1836. It details a case brought by Taney's client Samuel Hauer Lewis against Frederick Stowe for 23 pounds, twelve shillings, 7½ pence, circa 1802, only three years after Taney passed the bar. President Jackson named Taney Secretary of the Treasury on September 24, 1833, but his nomination was rejected by the Senate on June 24, 1834. Taney was the first Cabinet appointee to be rejected by the Senate. Appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1835; the Senate rejected that appointment too.

In 1836, Jackson named Taney Chief Justice to succeed John Marshall. A change in the makeup of the Senate resulted in Taney's confirmation; he served until his death in 1864. He is chiefly remembered for his decision in the Dred Scott case, 1857, which stated that slaves were not citizens and that Congress had no power to prohibit slavery in territories.
