RENE MAGRITTE Letter to a friend, accepting congratulations on his 64th birthday, criticizing an essay written about his work, and declining a request to write an essay himself Autograph Letter signed: " RM ", 1p, 5¼x8½. Magritte thanks his correspondent for a birthday greeting " which confirms the fact of surviving for 64 years already " and expresses his thoughts on an interview that a student wrote about him in a " review ". Magritte is highly critical of the piece, saying that the student's good intentions and enthusiasm are not well served by insufficient attention and by confusion in writing. The artist also mentions not having any ideas for a text that his correspondent wanted him to write regarding another interview. His works have influenced film makers and musicians, as well as graphic artists, and have frequently been borrowed and parodied. Magritte greatly influenced pop art, although he criticized that genre for genre for representing the world as it is. In 1962, the year of this letter, Magritte created ten paintings, including his version of the Mona Lisa. Magritte's Surrealist works were characterized by spatial manipulation, metamorphic themes and use of iconographic images, such as men in bowler hats, birds, lions, horsemen and leaves. Magritte died five years after penning this letter, leaving a legacy of some 1,300 paintings. Thin paper strip attached at top blank edge. See more material from these signers.
