Rare Personal Hand Signed Letter Mrs. Leland Stanford along with her husband founded Stanford University as a memorial to her son. In this letter to prominent San Francisco citizen Horatio Seymour Manning, Mrs Leland Stanford writes about her son and the recent passing of her brother [Charles Lathrop]. Lathrop was a past exhalted ruler of the San Francisco Elks, and he was being memorialized by the Elks, who offered Mrs. Alas, she was traveling and could not attend, and in this letter she sends her regrets and reflects on her son, brother and devotion to God. Less than a decade later she would be murdered. Most of her correspondence is in museums and rarely comes up for sale. Nothing this personal has ever come up.
