In it, she says that she's completely re-written the last act of the play and that it's "much better and tighter". Letters handwritten and signed by Buck are extremely rare. Autograph letter signed Pearl S.1 page, 7¼x10¼, on stationery imprinted with Perkasie, Pennsylvania rural route address. Mc Clintic: Here is The Crystal Heart again. Give [illegible] and a good deal of [illegible] news to me. And written an entirely new last act. And tried to make Paris less [illegible] and so [illegible].
If it is still not played, [illegible] I think it's much better and tighter. Will you tell me what you think? Buck established Welcome House, Inc. The first international, interracial adoption agency, in 1949, and was herself an adoptive parent. Alfredson appeared to be an immigrant, as was Buck: she was born in West Virginia and lived in the United States when this letter was written, but grew up in China.
She published her autobiography, My Several Worlds, in 1954, the year that this letter is dated. She was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1938). Best known for her novels about China (including The Good Earth ; 1932 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction), Buck wrote over 70 novels as well as biographies, an autobiography (My Several Worlds, 1954), dramas, children's literature and translations from the Chinese.
