No place, 1871 January 17. In French, translated in full: I'm going to, with all the thanks for your gracious memories, express to you my regrets to not be able to accept your friendly invitation.

This evening there is going to be, at Mr. [name difficult to decipher], my hosts in Versailles, a small gathering of their friends and of some of mine.

I therefore must plan to not be there, even on the [one word difficult to decipher], leave for one hour in the evening to go and find you. I hope to free myself another night, and thank you again for the pleasant memories. Please accept, Sir, the expression of my distinguished sentiments.
