MATTHEW GRISWOLD This historically significant letter was signed by Matthew Griswold as second Governor of Connecticut in 1785. It regards the difficulty that William Samuel Johnson, a signer of the U.

Constitution, had in getting funds from Connecticut to represent the state at the Second Continental Congress. A rare letter that gives insight into the political situation of the United States before the passage of the Constitution!

Griswold as Governor of Connecticut. 2 pages, 7½x9¼, 1 sheet folded, front and verso, docketed on verso. Addressed to Ezekiel Williams, Esq. In full: Sir A few Days since I Recd. A letter from the Secretary of Congress Informing that Some ver Important Matters Depending in Congress and Urging in the Most Pressing Terms that the De-legates forthwith attend the Congress - By last Post I Recd.

The second session of the Continental Congress was held between 1775 to 1789. He was a member of the Committee of the Pay Table for Connecticut from 1775 and sheriff of Hartford County from 1767 to 1789. Griswold was also President of the State Convention that ratified the United States Constitution on Jan.

Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Light tears at right and left edges and inside letter, which touch handwriting but not signature, along folds. Handwriting, but not signature, is cut off at right edge.
