MARK HOPKINS - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 01/27/1879 - HFSID 173967. MARK HOPKINS Theologian Mark Hopkins wrote this letter from Williams College in 1879 to turn down an invitation because of a Senior Examination at the school. Autograph letter signed "Mark Hopkins". Pencil notations in top left corner in unknown hand. 1 page, 5x8, ruled paper. Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, Jan.

In full: My dear Sir, I find that our Senior Examination be-fore a Committee of the Trustees and of the Alumni, and in which I have to take a part comes the week of the meeting of your Association. I have also some special work on hand and so must decline the invita-tion [illegible] which you honor me. The theme is a tempting one. It deserves, and at the present time needs, strong presentation, and I trust you will find some one who will do it justice. Hopkins, who taught moral philosophy and rhetoric at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts from 1830 and was college president from 1836 to 1872, emphasized self-education and the Socratic method of teaching, with teacher and student questioning each other, over dogmatic learning.

He was also a theologian and, despite having no formal training in theology, was ordained a Congregationalist minister in 1836. His theology valued piety and morality to be as important as the intellect and emphasized material prosperity (which he said should be considered stewardship rather than an end in and of itself). His lectures on Christianity at Lowell University in Boston, Massachusetts were collected into four volumes, the first of which, 1846's Lectures on the Evidences of Christianity, was used by American Christian apologetics and was reprinted until 1909. Folds and creases (not near signature). Adhesive remnants on verso (no show-through).
