Autograph Letter Signed: " John Burroughs ", 1p, 6x9¼. No place, 1904 February 20, Saturday Morning. In part: The morning has come when I must leave your delightful study. I had no idea I should stay so long but here I have lingered.Enjoying it more and more each day. I came to rest & I have remained to work. I have picked up rapidly & feel entirely well & strong again.... Born on his family's farm in Roxbury, New York on April 3, 1837, Burroughs, who died on a train returning from California (March 29, 1921), would be buried there on April 3, 1921, on what would have been his 84th birthday. A friend of Walt Whitman, Burroughs also wrote Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person (1867), the first Whitman biography.
In all, he penned 441 essays that were collected in 23 volumes. These works include Birds and Poets (1877), Literary Values (1902), Ways of Nature (1905) and Camping and Tramping with Roosevelt (1907). Minor smudging of ink, not affecting signature. Lightly soiled at blank upper edge, creased at corners (nick at upper left corner), light pencil notation (unknown hand) above salutation.
