I have thought it best to send this information to you before allowing him to proceed -- he says he is desirous of returning home & to resuming his practice there as a Physician if this be the case it would be well enough to let him proceed -- but should he desire to proceed on to join his Command it would be objectionable to allow him thus to pass thro. Please answer & oblige your obed. Johnson's Island was a Union Civil War prison in Lake Erie.
The prison, which housed Confederates and civilians seemingly disloyal to the Union, received its first prisoners in April 1862. Taylor had been transferred there from Fort Donalson in Tennessee.
On September 29, 1862, Davis would shoot and kill Major General William Nelson, a former commanding officer, over a personal insult. Davis, a veteran of the Mexican War (he served under Zachary Taylor at Buena Vista), had been put in command of Fort Sumter in August 1858 and was present when the fort was bombed, beginning the Civil War. Named a Brigadier General in 1861, Davis served with distinction at the battles of Elkhorn (Pea Ridge) and Corinth earlier in 1862. Hamilton resigned his military commission in April 1863.
