In full: My dear Sir I have yr letter & have handed it to Mr Butter who will send you one of Mr Chases [sic] letters if he can find one suitable to send - He keep all my documents - but is quite [illegible] and may not be able to go to the office at present.
Eildon was Cooke's home in Ogontz, Pennsylvania. It was bought by Charles Denis Barney, his son-in-law in 1878. After burning down in 1881, it was rebuilt.
Cooke lived at Eildon with his daughter and son-in-law. He served as fiscal agent for the U.
Problems in building the Northern Pacific Railroad (the second transcontinental railroad) and the financial crisis of 1873 forced Cooke to close his business Jay Cooke & Co. He later recouped his fortune with silver mines in Utah in 1878 and 1879 and investments in real estate in the West.
