Autograph Letter Signed: "James Buchanan" as Congressman, 1p, 7¾x9¾. To Secretary of War James Barbour.

In part: I have been requested to place the name of Mr. Joseph Bauman before you as an applicant for the now vacant post of Barrack Master at Carlisle.

He resides in that place & is I believe a respectable man. I presume he will soon send you his recommendation....

" Integral leaf addressed by Buchanan: "The Hon: James Barbour/Secretary of War. Folds, vertical fold touches "e" in James. Slightly nicked, worn edges of letter. Slight separations at blank horizontal folds at margins.

Slightly creased, shaded at edges. Address leaf is stained and shaded at mid panel.
