GARFIELD The Congressman puts his early carpenter training to good use at his home in Mentor. Mentor, Ohio, 1877 October 10. In full: I find I did not order enough lumber for my repairs here-Please send me immediately 8 pieces 2x4 12 ft/16 [pieces 2x4] 16 ft/6 [pieces] 4x4 14 ft/800 ft common inch/400 [ft] fencing 16 ft. Garfield was already a Congressman when he wrote this letter. He was about to leave for Washington as the 45 th Congress was to begin its first session on October 15, five days after this letter.

He was only 18 months old when his 33-year-old father died, leaving his mother a widow with four children. The family lived in a log cabin in Otsego County, Ohio. By the age of 14, Garfield was an excellent student and excelled at manual labor. Some touch parts of the signature. Folds, one vertical runs between the A.
