THOMAS HENRY HUXLEY (1825-95) HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED, T. 4.5 x 7, on his personal embossed letterhead 4 MARLBOROUGH PLACE, ABBEY ROAD N.
, May 4, 1889, a brief handwritten letter to a Mr. Theatfield, in part: Let me reciprocate your good wishes - we? , by the English biologist and anthropologist who specialized in comparative anatomy.
In 1863, eight years before Darwin published his Decent of Man, Huxley published Man's Place in Nature, in which he argued that humans were no exception to the theory of evolution. He was instrumental in developing scientific education in Britain and fought against the more extreme versions of religious tradition. He was a professor at the Royal School of Mines (1854-85) during which time he worked on many projects to advance the place of science in British life. Huxley's detailed anatomical work was always first rate and productive and he worked mainly to reveal the revolutionary relationship between groups. The handwritten letter is affixed to a slightly larger sheet and is in fine condition, with minor age toning and a small paperclip stain at the top center edge.
