I thank you for your kind invitation and much regret that it will not be in my power to accept it. PIERCE was the only U.

President elected to office and denied renomination by his party for a second term. On the first ballot at the June 2-6, 1856 Democratic Convention in Cincinnati, Buchanan led Pierce 135½ to 122½. Pierce's support gradually diminished, and Buchanan was unanimously nominated on the 17th ballot, receiving all 296 votes cast.
