ALS: " Eppa Hunton ", 1p, 4½x7. In full: I expect to go to Washington City tomorrow and will carry with me one of (sic) pictures for you. I shall be at the Normandie Hotel and will be glad to see you there after 5 P. I shall remain there several days.

After serving through its first session, he entered the Confederate Army as Colonel of the 8th Virginia Infantry, with whom he first saw action at the battle of First Manassas. After the Battle of Gettysburg, Hunton was promoted, and he served through the rest of the war as Brigadier General. Following a serious loss at Five Forks in March 1865, he was captured at Sailor's Creek on April 6, 1865 and imprisoned in Fort Warren until July 1865.

After the war, Hunton was a successful Virginia attorney, and he was elected as a Democrat to the U. Hunton was also a U.
