EBENEZER ORMSBEE The Vermont Governor and Republican Party figure sends his acceptance of an invitation, signs name in black ink Autograph letter signed: Ebenezer J. Written on State of Vermont Executive Chamber letterhead. Lehmaier of New York City. In full: My Dear Sir, Your letter and card of invitation by which you extend to me an invitation to be present at the Second Annual Dinner of the Republican Club of the City of New York on Feb.

11th 1888, has been received; and I beg to assure you, shall [illegible] it possible for me so to do, I should avail myself of the opportunity offend to meet the gentlemen of the Club and other distinguished gentlemen. That the cause of the Republican Party ready be advanced; and the memory of the lamented Lincoln honored by this proposed meeting is made certain; and I would gladly be with you to [illegible] to it, the approval and best wishes of the Republicans of the [illegible] Mountain Stat; but present [illegible]. Ormsbee enlisted in the 1st Vermont Infantry in April 1861 to serve in the Civil War, reaching the rank of Captain of the 12th Vermont infantry, and upon his return in 1865 began practicing law in Brandon, Vermont. In 1884 Ormsbee was nominated by the State Republican Convention to run for lieutenant governor, and in 1886 was elected Governor of Vermont. He became a major figure within the Republican Party, he served as a commissioner to treat with the Paiute Indians of Nevada, as well as in Samoa, adjusting claims of U.

Ormsbee furthermore was a Freemason, who was president of the Brandon Free Public Library, president of the Brandon Cemetery Association and president of the Brandon National Bank. Binding holes in left margin.
