Daniel Webster represented Massachusetts in the U. In 1841, he resigned from the Senate to join President William Henry Harrison's Cabinet as Secretary of State. He stayed on in Tyler's Cabinet, resigning in 1843 and returning to the Senate in 1845. One of America's greatest orators, Webster once again resigned his Senate seat to become Fillmore's Secretary of State on July 22, 1850.
At the Whig National Convention held in Baltimore June 17-20, 1852, Secretary of State Webster received 29 votes on the first ballot; President Fillmore had 133 votes and General Winfield Scott had 131 votes. Webster's staunch supporters only succeeded in giving the presidential nomination to Scott on the 53rd ballot. Gravely disappointed, Webster refused to support or campaign for the Whig ticket. Shortly before the election, he died in Marshfield on October 24, 1852 at the age of 70. ¾-inch diagonal tear at lower right corner.½-inch paper separation at center of right vertical fold.
