DANIEL WEBSTER Webster handwrote, signed and dated this letter to Secretary of War John Calhoun in 1824, stating that he would visit Calhoun regarding a pension matter. Autograph letter signed: "DWebster", 1p, 7¾x9¾, 1 sheet folded front and verso, with docket on verso. With small printed label affixed on lower edge. Addressed on docket to Honble Jno. In full: My Dear Sit I will call at the office overtly, to be informed on the subject of the Pension mentioned in this letter - Yrs [illegible] truly. In 1842, he negotiated the Webster-Ashburton Treaty with Great Britain, setting the U. Canadian borderline between Maine and New Brunswick and agreeing that both nations suppress slave trade. Webster, who supported the Compromise of 1850, was disappointed that he had little support for the presidential nomination at the Whig National Convention, held in Baltimore from June 17 to 20, 1852.

The efforts of his supporters only succeeded in denying President Fillmore the nomination and giving it to General Winfield Scott. Secretary of State Webster refused to campaign for or support Scott. His health began to fail and he died on October 24, 1852, at the age of 70. Lightly toned, stained, discolored and creased.

Spine of letter is worn and torn. Wax seal remnant on docket, which has discolored and rippled letter (does not touch writing). Folded thrice horizontally and vertically. Worn, torn and separated along folds. Tape repairs and reinforcement on two of the horizontal folds.
