GENERAL BRAXTON BRAGG - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 09/19/1849 - HFSID 283824. BRAXTON BRAGG As a Lt. Colonel in the US Army (1849), Bragg signs an autograph letter commending in vivid detail an artillery sergeant who fought with him at Buena Vista in the Mexican War, a battle that forged an enduring connection between Bragg and Jefferson Davis. Autograph Letter signed: Braxton Bragg/Lt.
U S Army, 1 page, 8x6¼. No addressee, probably a general letter of recommendation for Love. In full: Sergeant Love was joined to my company at Monterey in Mexico. In the assault on that town he displayed Courage activity and presence of mind I had every reason to be satisfied with his conduct. In the great Battle at'Buena Vista' he commanded a gun in my battery and in the darkest hour of that eventful conflict his cheerfulness and contempt for danger infused a spirit in the men which was highly beneficial and conductive to the fortunes of the day.Love deserves well of his country for his gallantry long services and good conduct. At Buena Vista (February 1847), Bragg's unit came to the aid of a beleaguered Colonel Jefferson Davis, helping to turn a potential defeat into a great victory for the US and for Davis personally.
Although the personal friendship between Bragg and Davis is disputed by some, citing Bragg's resignation from the Army (1855) while Davis was Secretary of War, there is no doubt that Davis respected Bragg's military skills. During the Civil War, General Bragg was most effective as an advisor to CSA President Davis (1861, 1864), proving an effective organizer who streamlined the conscription process. He was less successful as a field general, blamed by many historians for Confederate defeats in the Western Theater and even for failing to follow up his greatest victory, Chickamauga (September 1863). Affixed at top edge to slightly larger white card. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso - minor show-through at lower left margin.
Lightly toned and soiled at edges. Center vertical fold crease has been repaired on verso. See more material from these signers. See more listings in our MILITARY (2,361). Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
