HILL The Brigadier General sends a signed, Civil War dated handwritten letter to General Joseph Wheeler asking that Glass be sent to him under a strong guard. Autograph Letter Signed: B J Hill/Col Pro. ", and Postscript signed: "B J Hill, 5½x8. Dalton (Georgia), 1864 April 8. In full: Gen'l: Papers rec'd in regards to Glass.

Have Glass sent to me under a strong guard. Please send by guard the name of point at which he was arrested. It may lead to his detection. " Postscript: " The man has done me good service, however he may be untrue. Send all evidence you have against him.

Confederate Brigadier General Benjamin J. When General Joseph Johnston assumed command of the Army of Tennessee, Hill served on his staff as Acting Provost Marshall General. Near war's end he commanded a brigade under Nathan Bedford Forrest. When his 35th Tennessee Regiment capitulated to Union forces on May 17, 1865, it was the last major unit to do so. Penned in light gray "secession ink" commonly used towards the end of the war, hence light but legible. Slightly frayed at left and right edges. Pencil notes (unknown hand) at upper blank margin.
