23 Nassau Street [New York City], 1898 May 20. For Marygold & Yellow Jacket, and hope they will prove satisfactory. Let me know very frankly, however, if they do not. It was a surprise to me that you did not take Witch & Glideaway, for they are very little smaller and are so much faster, as a pair, Glideaway in particular being a really very fast horse. Which would enable you to rid yourself at any time of any one of them, leaving you what you like best.
At the time he wrote this letter, August Belmont II was emerging as a dominant figure in the sport of horseracing. Belmont, who served as President of the WRA, was also a member of New York state's first Racing Commission and Chairman of the Jockey Club, which he helped found in 1894. Belmont was known for breeding prestigious thoroughbreds, including Man o' War, who won 20 of 21 races in 1919 and 1920.
The Belmont Stakes and Belmont Park were named after Belmont's father, August I, a prominent banker, diplomat and horseracing enthusiast. Upon his father's death in 1890, August Belmont took full control of August Belmont & Company. Under his guidance, it remained one of the largest and most powerful banking firms in the country.
