In full: I enclose the letter of Mr Johnston asking me to make enquiry as to a claim he has had settled for a waggon (sic) & horse; will you have the goodness to furnish me with such information as is requested by him; & the evidence in your Department will aford (sic) ; & return the enclosed, with such information. " Addressed by Jackson on verso: " Mr.
Docketed, probably by Hagner: "19 Jany 1824/Genl Jackson/Recd & Ansd same day". He served in the Treasury Department for 56 years, resigning his office in 1849. Twice Congress voted Hagner appreciation for his services in the settlement of large and important claims before the institution of the Court of Claims. Senator ANDREW JACKSON was a presidential candidate in 1824. In the November 2, 1824 election, he defeated Secretary of State John Q. Adams (153,544 to 108,740 popular votes, 99-84 electoral votes), Secretary of the Treasury William H. Crawford (47,136 popular, 41 electoral votes) and House Speaker Henry Clay (46,618 popular, 37 electoral votes).As no candidate received a majority of the 261 electoral votes, the election devolved upon the House of Representatives, which elected Adams sixth President with Clay's support. Horizontal folds, which had separated, have been repaired on verso. Silked along right edge of verso, light show through at blank margin.
Nicked and worn at edges, with some repairs. 1-inch circular tear at right edge from opening of seal (its remnant on verso). Light vertical fold touches the "c" in Jackson.
