IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT PASSED LAWS THAT BARRED JEWS FROM HOLDING ANY OFFICIAL POSITIONS, INCLUDING TEACHING AT UNIVERSITIES. AND, EINSTEIN'S WORKS WERE AMONG THOSE TARGETED IN THE NAZI BOOK BURNINGS THAT FOLLOWED. WITH THE AID OF THE BRITISH ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE COUNCIL EINSTEIN WAS ABLE TO LEAVE GERMAN TO ESCAPE NAZI PERSECUTION, AND AT THE TIME OF THIS LETTER HAD FOUND A SAFE SANTUARY IN AN ACCEPTED POSITION AT THE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY, LOCATED IN PRINCETON, NEW.

WHERE HE WOULD STAY UNTIL THE END OF HIS LIFE. DURING THIS PERIOD EINSTEIN WAS VERY BUSY TRYING TO DEVELOP A UNIFIED FIELD THEORY.

IN THIS LETTER HE RELUCTANTLY DECLINES AND INVITATION FROM THE B'NAI B'RITH ORGANIZATION. Einstein, one page, 8.5 x 11, February 4, 1934, Princeton [NJ], letter to the Pisgah Lodge B'nai B'rith in Detroit, by the theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity.

In German (with full translation): To my great regret I cannot comply with your kind request due to being overburdened with work. The B'nai B'rith organization is committed to the security and continuity of the Jewish people and combating anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry. This boldly signed letter was written at an exceptionally challenging and busy time for Einstein and is in fine condition, with mailing fold lines, and some age toning.
