1919 John Masefield - ALS AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED -w/ COLLECTED POEMS Book Gift. John Masefield, Handwritten Letter dated July 31, 1919 on Boar's Hill, Oxford Stationary. Originally written to John Granger of Texas, with a "Collected Poems" Book by Masefield that was given as a gift. Granger, I thank you very much indeed for your most kind letter + charming thought. It was most good + thoughtful of you to copy out + send me the "Tale of the 10th Hussars". It is most strange + pathetic to read the poem again, + to feel from it something of glamour which it gave me so many years ago. I now nothing of the incident in Baker Pasha's life, but I will look it up at the Bodleian here. I doubt (with you) that the "Queen on her throne" heard it, but I will try to find out if the Colonel Prince praised. He was a good old sport, + got on well with men, like his son. If I can find out anything I will let you know. I will try to identify the authors pf the poem.

It reads rather like the manner of Austey. Will you accept it from me with my most grateful thanks to you for giving me the charming unexpected pleasure f seeing this old poem again?

I have much enjoyed reading it, though how long ago it all seems, + how much better a poem it was, 35 years ago, when it was "like a map to a clown" to me, a wonderful thing in an unknown??
